SmarAct focus stages are objective manipulators for precise focusing by positioning the objective along the Z-axis in standard microscopes and insert systems. The SOM-FS enables highly precise, repeatable objective positioning with nanometer resolution thanks to closed-loop control and stick-slip piezoelectric actuation. Its compact design and flexible customization options make it ideal for demanding microscopy. Integrated weight compensation ensures stable and smooth motion across a wide range of objective sizes and weights.

What is the SOM-FS focusing unit and what advantages does it offer?

The SOM-FS is a high-precision objective lens manipulator for Z-axis focusing in upright and inverted microscope systems. It can be integrated into standard microscopes and insert systems. The SOM-FS features encoder resolution down to 1 nm and configurable travel ranges. Integrated weight compensation allows for stable and precise motion with a wide range of objective sizes and weights.

What technology is used and how does the SOM-FS differ from other focusing solutions?

The SOM-FS features closed-loop feedback control with nanometer resolution for highly accurate and repeatable positioning. Piezoelectric drives enable compact, lightweight designs with fast settling time. Extensive customization options, including tailored adapters, travel ranges, and mounting interfaces, ensure flexible system integration.

Is the SOM-FS suitable for upright and inverted microscope systems?

Yes. The SOM-FS is compatible with both upright and inverted configurations. A flexible design option can be provided for use in both orientations.

How can the SOM-FS focusing unit be integrated into my system?

The SOM-FS can be integrated using standardized or customized mechanical interfaces. It can operate as a standalone solution or as part of a multi-axis SmarAct positioning system.

What objective sizes and weights can the SOM-FS support?

Thanks to its optimized mechanical design and counterbalancing options, the SOM-FS supports a wide range of objective sizes and significant payloads, ensuring smooth and precise motion even under load.

Can the SOM-FS be combined with other SmarAct positioning systems?

Yes. As part of SmarAct’s modular portfolio, the SOM-FS can be combined with XY stages, existing setups, and other positioning solutions. Coordinated multi-axis operation is supported by the available controllers.

How is the SOM-FS controlled?

The SOM-FS is operated using SmarAct controllers tailored to specific application requirements and budget levels. A comprehensive software API for C/C++, Python and LabView™ is available under Windows® and Linux®. A large library of programming examples is included in the installation, and SCPI-based ASCII command protocols for ethernet interfaces is also available. Manual control by integrated or external hand units can be purchased. The systems can be equipped with one or more I/O modules, either digital or a combination of digital and analog I/O for external control and synchronization. In addition, a plug-in for integration with µManager is included.

Are extended travel ranges possible with the SOM-FS focus stage? If yes, what options are available?

Yes. Extended travel ranges can be realized depending on the configuration and application requirements. Please contact the SmarAct sales team for consultation.

For which environmental conditions is the SOM-FS available?

High-vacuum (HV) or ultra-high-vacuum (UHV), and non-magnetic options of the SOM-FS are available upon request.
