Motion Control for SmarAct Multi-Axis Systems
The new SmarAct ECM 3.1 motion controller enables controlled motion for SmarAct multi-axis systems such as SmarPods, TriPods and SmarGons. Instead of moving only from point to point, systems can precisely follow user-definable paths with coordinated movement across multiple axes.
This creates new possibilities for applications where the complete motion path matters, including stable pivot-point rotations, curved trajectories and synchronized multi-axis motion.
With the ECM 3.1, motion paths are interpolated and transferred to the system axes at a stable cycle rate. In combination with MCS2 modules via EtherCAT®, cycle rates of up to 1 kHz are possible.
This enables SmarAct multi-axis systems to:
- Follow calculated trajectories with highest path accuracy beyond point-to-point positioning
- Coordinate all axes within one precise motion sequence
- Perform curved movements on user-definable paths in pose-space
- Maintain stable motion behavior around user-definable pivot points
Precision Solutions, Engineered Together
Every motion controll application comes with its own trajectory, process requirements and integration challenges. SmarAct works closely with you to evaluate your motion concept, define the right system architecture and support the integration of SmarPods, TriPods or SmarGons into your setup.
Whether you need stable rotations around defined pivot points, curved movement paths or coordinated multi-axis motion, SmarAct supports you from the first motion concept to the final system integration.
High Precision for Demanding Applications
Path accuracy is a key factor in controlled motion. In the following example, a SmarPod was commanded to move in a spiral pattern at 20 mm/s within an area of 1 mm × 1 mm. The complete movement took only 950 ms.
Without adaptive control, the maximum deviation from the calculated trajectory was approximately 26.9 µm. With adaptive control algorithms enabled, the maximum deviation was reduced by a factor of 10 to 2,7 µm.

This makes SmarActMC 1.0 and ECM 3.1 suitable for applications where precise path following is critical, including photonics, microscopy, semiconductor technology, microassembly, precision metrology, automated inspection and research.
With controlled motion, SmarAct systems move beyond precise target positioning. They enable coordinated, trajectory-based movement for demanding processes where every part of the motion matters.
